Photograph of the Jackson County Poor House building as it appeared shortly before its demolition in 2013. The structure, located on the Southern Illinois University farm in Carbondale, represented one of the final surviving buildings associated with the Jackson County Poor Farm. The image appeared in the April 21, 2013 edition of the Southern Illinoisan accompanying Becky Malkovich’s article titled “On the edge of town … on the edge of life.” The original caption reads: “Jackson County’s rundown poor house is shown on Thursday in Carbondale. The building is located on the SIU farm.” The overlaid text in the image reflects the title of the article.
