Graduate student Justin Shields operates ground-penetrating radar during a geophysical survey of the Jackson County Poor Farm Cemetery in 2017. The survey was conducted by the Center for Archaeological Investigations (CAI) on a wooded knoll located on the Southern Illinois University farm property in Carbondale, Illinois. The work helped identify subsurface anomalies consistent with graves, which were later confirmed through limited archaeological excavation.
