Engine 1536 on the Carbondale turntable in early 1959. The coal chutes along U. S. Highway 51 are shown in the background. Engine 1536 was built in 1914 by Baldwin Locomotive Works and purchased new by the Illinois Central Railroad, 1 of 605 Mikado locomotives the railroad owned over its history.

Engine 1536, a 2-8-2 Mikado locomotive, loading up at the Carbondale coal chute, early 1959. Loading of coal and water and incidental maintenance takes a steam locomotive about 1 hour. A diesel engine can be fueled from a pump such as the one in the foreground in 10 minutes or so.

J. L. Hennesy, Murphysboro, an Illinois Central Railroad boiler inspector furloughed recently in connection with the retirement of steam facilities on the St. Louis division, takes a look at one of the last steam locomotives on the railroad and a modern passenger diesel. Shown here are Steam Engine 1536, a 2-8-2 Mikado locomotive, and Diesel Engine 4038.
Diesel locomotive 4038 was a General Motors Electro-Motive Division E-9 passenger locomotive built in 1956. It was scrapped in 1980.
