408-360 Million Years Ago

Known as the age of fishes, the Devonian Period witnessed the rise of trees and other land vegetation. Some marine deposition continued in Illinois, and the first amphibians appeared. Fossils preserve the remains of brachiopods, fishes, and vegetation.
