Description
The Illinois Central Railroad Steam Engine 1536, a 2-8-2 Mikado locomotive, rests next to the new Diesel Engine 4038 in Carbondale, Illinois. J. L. Hennesy of Murphysboro, Illinois, stands on the steam engine he works on as boiler inspector and talks to the engineer of the new Diesel Engine. Due to the retirement of steam facilities, Hennesy was furloughed.
Diesel locomotive 4038 was a General Motors Electro-Motive Division E-9 passenger locomotive built in 1956. It was scrapped in 1980.
