Description

The Illinois Central Railroad Engine 1536, a 2-8-2 Mikado locomotive, rests next to the new Diesel Engine 4038 in Carbondale, Illinois. J. L. Hennesy of Murphysboro, Illinois, stands next to the steam engine he works on as boiler inspector. Due to the retirement of steam facilities, Hennesy was been furloughed.

Diesel locomotive 4038 was a General Motors Electro-Motive Division E-9 passenger locomotive built in 1956. It was scrapped in 1980.
