Tatsugoro Nagashima

Tatsugoro Nagashima.JPG

Tatsugoro Nagashima was a woodblock illustrator and printer who was working actively in Edo (modern Tokyo) from around 1850-1890. He is also known as Utagawa Yoshitora. Like Nagashima, sometimes artists would change their name according to the school they were with. He studied under Utagawa Kuniyoshi in the Utagawa school, and therefore later took that name as his own. He was known to excel in illustrating prints involving warriors, beautiful Japanese women, kabuki actors, and foreigners. Even though there is no information regarding his birth or death dates, it is likely he never actually travelled enough to see the foreign scenes he was printing, adding greatly to the level of skill he posessed. He is known for his bright, vivid colors.
